Wikus back at Lions
Springbok and current Saracens player Wikus van Heerden has signed a new deal with his former team from Johannesburg the Lions. Van Heerden announced a few days ago that he would be leaving the English club and will return home to South Africa. It was thought that he would return to the Bulls where he tasted much success in the past, but he decided to to head back to the Lions where he played for nine years before he went to the Bulls.
Van Heerden will join the Lions on 1 July when his contract with Saracens ends and has signed until 2012, Van Heerden explained why he chose the Johannesburg team over other teams “I spent nine years at the Lions, before moving over to the Bulls. At that stage I needed a change. With all the changes at the Lions now and with the new people appointed, this is an exciting and ideal opportunity for me to make the most of what is left of my rugby career.” with this said one starts to wonder if one of the reasons he left the Lions in the first place might be linked to Frans Ludeke the Lions coach at that time, and then again a few years later with Ludeke moving to the Bulls Van Heerden took off to England. Wikus will not play any part in the Super 14 but will be ready for action come Currie Cup.
