Smith is said to have had the operation on Wednesday in Pretoria and is currently back on crutches.
While it seems Smith will miss the early overseas leg of the Cheetahs’ Super Rugby campaign, he is expected to return to training within the next two to three weeks.
Despite this being Smith’s fourth surgery, Cheetahs doctor Ian Morris told Volksblad newspaper that he is positive that the 30-year-old will return to the field fully recovered in the upcoming months.
“It was decided to re-open and clean the wound again. Now he just has to recover from the operation and then we’ll look forward.”
