Roux, a 115-kg prop for Super 14 champions the Bulls, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of beating the police officer to death.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga said Roux, 28, would appear in court again on October 15.

His lawyer told the court that Roux acted in self-defence and intended to plead not guilty, local media reported.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers said the national squad supported Roux.

“The team supports him 100 per cent, not on the deed but rather on the circumstances that led to the situation developing,” De Villiers was quoted as saying by The Star newspaper.
